Look at Applications downto>Sound&Video>Sound Recorder click see popup click file see sound preferences try alert sounds like bark, get it by clicking the radio button, adjust slider for% age of sound.(Check enable window button sounds if you wish) In case no bark other sound emits do this>Click Hardware to see devices to configure viz default and HW like Microphone inbuilt USB Camera, default preferred.Next click Input to choose device for input. If you have Mic inbuilt USB Camera select it,Adjust Input Volume Slider to desired stage Make audible sound near USB WebCam or Microphone to see movement of "pips" on the dotted input level indicator. If you have got this OK your hard and software are fine.If not problem needs further Probe.Good Luck

Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if known).
