lost my volume control applet on the task bar

Can somebody help me?

I am using ubuntu 10.04LST and I noticed yesterday that my volume control applet ( I think it's called) , that little symbol on the upper bar is missing. so is the little envelop symbol for the email.
 When I try using System> ? preferences > sound , I get a message "waiting for sound system to respond" and nothing appends.
I have recently installed and uninstalled different applications and I probably removed something I should not have done.
Can somebody tell me witch application I should install using the Synaptic package manager to get these applets back.

I'm afraid I will need your help to give you the output you need

1. will I need to type sudo to perform the command you suggest

2. do I type the command you suggest on a single line

3. how can I capture the the output on my terminal so i can give it to you

1. NO or I would have added sudo to the command.
2. Yes it's one big command
