I am currently running Ubuntu 11.04 on a Sony VAIO VPCEH. Audio works fine out of the internal speakers but when I plug headphones into the headphone jack, sound continues to come from the internal speakers only. Additionally, the internal microphone does not work at all.

I have tried appending "options snd-hda-intel model=xx" to the /etc/modprobe.
Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Try:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
add this line:
options: options snd-hda-intel model=vaio enable=1 index=0 position_fix=1
You probably already have:
options: options snd-hda-intel model=vaio
So you can simply add to the end of the line. Save the new file, close gedit and reboot to test

Thanks so much for your fast reply.
Unfortunately, sound is still coming from internal speakers only and no sound has been detected from the microphone.
My /etc/modprobe.
options snd-hda-intel model=vaio enable=1 index=0 position_fix=1
appended to the bottom of the file. I rebooted the laptop after adding this file
Note: terminal returned these (probably unrelated) warnings when I saved and closed the alsa-base.conf file - changes to the file were saved successfully though.
(gedit:1963): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to set the permissions of `/root/

Gnome ALSA Mixer appears to have a new field though, called Digital. Adjusting its levels has no effect.
If it helps, command
alsamixer
run through terminal shows Master (51<>51), PCM (100<>100), MIC B, Mic C [off], Mic E [off], Mic F [off], S/PDIF [00], Beep (44)

Yep, I rebooted after editing and rebooted after running those commands. Both problems are still there, no visible changes.
Just to clarify, did you mean:
options snd-hda-intel...
Instead of
options: options snd-hda-intel...
I've tried both

A temporary solution has been found:
1) Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-alsa-
2) Restart computer
Audio controls are now available for me in alsa and pulse audio interfaces. Headphones work without noise from the speaker, and then internal mic picks up sound. (Please note: internal mic works, but is very quiet with large amounts of static. It is not practically unusable, so it is still a problem)
Please note that this method worked for me BOTH with AND without:
options snd-hda-intel model=vaio enable=1 index=0 position_fix=1
inside file gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
I don't know if other fixes provided by actionparsnip had any effect on the eventual outcome.
Closing problem for now (as mic static is probably a different problem). Thank you for your assistance!
