Creative X-Fi Titanium Fatality - Microphone gets no input, no sound.
Running Ubuntu 11.04, with a Creative X-fi Titanium Fatality PCI-Express card. I have a front panel but tested it with both front and back microphone ports. Back port is a flexi-jack though and can be a line-in port as well. To disable line-in you have to disable it as a capture source and switch it to Mic. (I tried that and it didn't work either).
I can't for the life of me get my microphone on my Creative X-FI Titanium Fatality PCI-Express card to work. I've search the web for countless hours and tried every combination of on/off switching in alsamixer and it just still doesn't work. No matter what mic I use (i've tried 3) none of them seem to be working with the card. The level meter always stays at 0 as if it's not receiving anything. NOTE: The sound on the system works perfectly fine. The surround sound works just fine and everything else including the games work perfectly. It's just the microphone that is not getting ANY input whatsoever. It's enabled and selected in the sound preferences but just doesn't get any input from any of the mics I plugin.
I've tested the mics on windows so it can't possibly be the mics. I have a 4.1 speaker set (4 speakers and subwoffer ). I set the hardware profile to 4.1 surround + analog mono input. That's the only way I can see the microphone listed under the input devices. I've muted Line-in like everyone has suggested. I've enabled/disabled countless times the Mic and PCM setting. Nothing I do seems to get the mic to get any audio. I've tried plugging the mic on the front panel, on the back of the computer, in other jacks... nothing. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Other people seem to have gotten this to work.
Any help with this problem would greatly be appreciated!!

Just in case it expires. Creative refuse to support Linux and I always advise people avoid these things.

Have you tried unmuting Centre/L and Linein in alsamixer?

I tried unmuting Centre/L and Linein in alsamixer and that didn't work as well. Have made sure that capture is set to microphone because of the flexijack on the card (it acts as line input or mic input depending on which is set as capture).
The machine does seem to realize there is a microphone and it does know that there is a capture device. Just not allowing me to use a mic at all. I'm going to try the front panel and the back of the computer again.

@actionparsnip: You said you actively tell people to avoid these. What are examples of high end sound cards that function beautifully in Linux, Windows, etc..? Sadly there just doesn't seem to be much of a choice in the market because of the constant chip updates that Creative do. They are always introducing new revolutionary ways to handle sound.
Yet I'm optimistic, if you can give me some good examples of quality sound cards that are on par if not better then the creative card I have, I may actually look into it. (That works well and has good linux drivers lol ;) )
I'm still trying to resolve the issue with the Mic. I did notice something though. If I select PCM and MIC then then make sure that LINE-IN is NOT muted, the bars start moving. I'm going to try to see if I can get it to sound out. Obviously it's now picking up something but its not being heard.

Creative aren't that great. They are ok for home audio projects but if you want real sound grunt then you want something like this an Apogee Digital Ensemble which retail around $2245 or a Digital Audio Labs CardDeluxe which roll at about $600. Those creative things are not very "high end" at all. Home users just think they are. Your card probably cost $130 which isn't much at all.
You could check the Ubuntu HCL for compatible sound devices and see what works

SUCCESS: Okay well I got it working. First off it must be in the back port. The front panel will NOT WORK. The front panel works if your hooking up a headset for listening, but the front panel Microphone DOES NOT WORK.
Once you have the microphone in the back you have to do a few things. First go to alsamixer via the console. Then make sure your MIC is setup to record. (Press tab to get to capture devices and use the spacebar to toggle only MIC as capturing). Once you do that go back to playback devices and make sure that LINE-IN is unmuted! If you want to hear yourself while you record on the microphone then make sure to set PCM as a recording device as well.
Recap: Set recording on MIC on capture device screen, make sure LINE-IN is not set as a capture source, (Optional: Use PCM as a capture source only if you want to hear yourself.) Then go to playback devices and make sure that LINE-IN is not muted. (Press M on the keyboard to toggle mute.)
-------
@actionparsnip: Thanks for the info about the cards. I didn't realize that creative aren't actually really good cards. I've been always told that they are. The cards you mentioned are a bit pricey to be honest, is there something more economical then the ones you mentioned that aren't creative? I'm looking for a card that works well with most OS's (including linux) and that it's of good performance (doesn't have to be super awesome).

Glad you got the fix and good share, hopefully others will find this if they have the same issue and find the same fix. Just hunt around, You can spend loads on a sound system. For home use creative are ok. If you are super serious about sound stuff then you want to spend a lot more :)

I know this is an old bug thread here, but maybe someone of you could clarify wethere the "WILL NOT WORK" status on a front panel microphone still presists or if know, since when it is solved?
