No sound output at all (but input is ok?)

I am brand new to ubuntu and have just installed Ubuntu Unity on my Lenovo ThinkPad laptop, but there is no sound whatsoever. However, I can see from the graphical interface in Sound Preferences > Input that the sound input appears to be working correctly.

I have tried the following:

Before Ubuntu 11.04 the default 'Desktop Environment' was Gnome. In 11.04 the Gnome interface (DE) is called 'Classic'. If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

If you are using Ubuntu 11.04 and haven't changed back to "Classic" session then you are using the Unity interface. The easiest way to open the Terminal in UNity is to use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.

So the methods in Unity are:

Dash > Search for Terminal

Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal

Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal

Copy-paste the following command into the Terminal to start editing the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Using the gedit editor, scroll down and add the following configuration line at the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file.

options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad

You will need to reboot the PC after applying the change to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file.

Then retest sound output using headphones and speakers.

No luck, I'm afraid, still no sound on headphone or speakers.
I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 Unity if that's important.

Also, if I do alsamixer and select sound card, I have a choice of
0 HDA Intel
1 HDA Nvidia
29 ThinkPad Consol Audio Control

but options 1 and 29 have no volume range, that is, they're set to zero and can't be increased. Option 0 however, is set to max.
