I was digging around Google, trying to find some answers...when I found this page:

I'm using the on-board sound ports (motherboard). If I read this Terminal output right, it should be called the:

HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SBHDA ATI SB.

Also, the website that instructed me to do this suggested that:

After upgrading ALSA and rebooting the computer make sure that the ALSA driver version, library version and utilities version are all exactly the same version number.

Well, this is what my configuration looks like:
Driver version: 1.0.23
Library version: 1.0.24.1
Utilities version: 1.0.24.2

If I'm reading this right, then it might be a kernel issue. I'm trying to get Natty to work with Alessio Bogani's low-latency kernel.

Tonight, I plugged in my old Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Gamer card. Music in Amarok sounds good, but a simple drum pattern in the Hydrogen Drum Machine is still distorted. I haven't tried it yet, but I guarantee that both Audacity and the VLC player still sound terrible.

Will anybody notice this Launchpad question and offer any help, or will the only response I receive be an e-mail stating that the question has expired? I have posted a few messages on this subject, and NOBODY has offered to help. Is this audio problem so baffling that everyone is clueless, or are they just unwilling to waste their time on a Linux newbie?

Actionparsnip, I apologize. I thought that Launchpad was maintained by the Ubuntu Devs. I assumed that since they wrote the OS, that they could figure out where the problem is. At least, I thought they would have a better idea than I do about the source of my software issues.

OK, marcobra. you got me.

How do I keep a question open long enough for someone to offer a solution? Clearly, this list that you posted reflects some closed posts...but there have been many others that aren't listed, because the Launchpad Janitor sent an automated e-mail saying that a question remained in the "open" state for too long. I guess when this happens, the question is deleted.

Anyway, here's the latest news.

Amarok actually has a small amount of distortion.
VLC has so much, that I cannot use it.
Audacity has plenty of distortion as well.
YouTube videos have the distorted sound also.
I cannot use Hydrogen Drum Machine either, because of the distorted sound.

Perhaps it's a hardware thing?
No, because I've tried both the on-board sound and a Creative sound card, and the sound issue is identical in both cases.
I've also re-formatted my HDD and tried Linux Mint 11. The distorted sound was actually worse in that OS.

Try pulling the volume levels to about 75% for each level. You can also do this if you ru:

alsamixer

and pull them down. You can then crank speakers. Makes sound a lot cleaner.

I've already tried that. I've even pulled the main slider in Sound Preferences down to 'Unamplified'. It helps a little, but not much.

I'm going to try something else. I get the feeling that this problem might be caused by the low-latency kernel that I installed via the abogani/ppa. I think I'll try UbuntuStudio again, since it ships with a different low-latency kernel. The last time I tried Studio was while it was still in 11.04 development.

OK, UbuntuStudio is installed and running well. I've only tested out the sound with Amarok, and everything seems fine. I will close this thread, because it appears that the problem has been solved. However, don't be surprised if I launch another issue for the two to help me with. Even though there is a long list on the right side of the page of people who are informed of whatever problem arises...actionparsnip and marcobra are the only people on the list who respond.

I apologize to you both, because I was unaware that the two of you were the only ones in Launchpad.net.
