I've got the same problem, but My problem began with updates that took 2 days to complete. I came home from work and My computer was at the reboot screen. It started normally, but there's no sound.

Thanks.

I as well am in the same predicament that Martin270 is in...What is the solution. Do I need a new compatible sound card. I recently took windows off my computer and am happy with the results ubuntu has but I haven't since the change over been able to listen to any music of any kind.
Thanks

Ok think I have now sorted the problem out after the last 2 days, it's nothing to do with the sound card or the software I just decided to mess round a bit with the sound properties and plug the speakers in to the first port on the card if you do it from behind its the first socket on the left if you turn your tower round to face you it's on the right, anyways where was I thats the first thing I did now on to the second point hopefully this will work for you guys, go to system then to preferences and go down to sound open this up and select everything to read the same in each pannel as follows: Sound Events: Device should be ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture. Music And Movies: ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture. Audi Conferencing: ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture. Default Mixer Tracks: This should be set to: Audigy 1 (SB0090) (alsa Mixer).
See if you can now hear any sound from your speakers by clicking on sounds in the "Sound Preferences" pannel and test logon or logoff sound if still no luck on to the next part everybody ready, ok....
Step 3 if you need to do this click on system go to preferences and go down to volume control it should read in the bar when you open it the device you are using as: Audigy 1 (SB0090) (alsa Mixer) if not click on file and change device, click on edit and go to preferences and click on every item on that list that you see in the check box to show as a (Tick) to show that it is on, next go to switches and check every box again in that list except for two of them which should be off they are the IEC 958 Optical Raw and the Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack they should not be checked keep them off. And now finally hope this works for everybody click the playback button in the Volume Control Pannel and turn everything up for sound not too high though just enough so you dont damage your speakers but leave 3 of them turned off they are as follows: Microphone keep that off, Phone also to be kept off and Audigy CD also to be kept off till I find out what to mess with next to correct the bad hissing noise from the Audigy CD Volume.

Sorry this was a long long list of things to do but hopefully you will all be able to hear sound from your computers now, I'm still messing around with things on here trying to find away to get my DVD's to play on here next and some other things but up to now I cant really complain about Ubuntu Linux like it far way better than Windows XP and Vista they are not worth my time. Hope this will prove usefull if not then let me know and I'll help a much as I can.

~Chuckle~ No problem, martin270. I feel like a dummy for a reason here. My computer has the motherboard soundcard and the PCI card...some reason, the PCI card is no longer working, BUT now the Motherboard card is. Weird thing, it was the other way around up until Thursday night. I don't get it, but oh well, its on!

Sirmac, What desktop or laptop do you have?
Have you tried to disable the motherboard sound card?
I have a Dell Dimension it was all custom built so the Sound Card has always been a pci card even when I decided to upgrade it to Audigy, I dont really know what else to suggest, I think that you are having a conflicting problem between your motherboard sound card and your pci sound card dont know if that helps or not, you could try it, but if you have the sound back on then it's up to you, maybe it had something to do with the updates the computer installed on it to make it go this way if so try and find out what it installed and how to remove it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks martin270 it nearly worked for me but not giving up.
Whilst trying out your idea of moving plugs and choosing new preferences it occurred to me that I had an inbuilt sound chip on the motherboard. Plugged up to that and fiddled with the settings in the preferences and my Phil collins album shouting out the speakers and appropriately singing 'another day in paradise'
Ubuntu is getting better by the day but thanks to you guys with all these great ideas

To martin270
I had the same problem and your info worked for me. Here are a few exception/mystery things:

- After I did all you said, for the first time I got a sounds from the test buttons Sound Events, Music and Movies, Audio Conferencing 'sound playback' but NOT 'sound capture'. I didn't turn the volume keys all the way up (there were at about 2/3) the first test, so I got little splat sounds. When I turned them all to the max, I now have BIG sound--to me that represents a great big error on the scale--maybe it just one or two of them causing the trouble.

-As many times as I turned off microphone and audigy CD buttons, one or the other was back on when I went back in. There is no 'save' feature on that window--as a programmer I find that bad judgement.

-And this is as good a place as any to get this off my chest: for hardware as touchy as sound, there should be just ONE place to make any adjustments, and it should BE IN ONE place. I'm using gutsygibbon and there's a horn icon and the desktop that does two different things if you poke one mouse button or the other. Then there's a Sound on the Preferences and not a thing about sound adjustment in the Applications menu Sound folder. These are some of the reasons some of us still hold onto Windows.

I hope you will keep working on this--I'm going to be watching. Thanks for your help. MJHill

I had the same problem talked about here. I have a Dell 8400 with a SB Audigy 2 ZS. Last night, after following martin270's directions through step 2, I got sound for the first time since I installed Ubuntu 2 days ago. I proceeded to watch a movie and listen to a CD with no problems.

This morning I turned on the computer and NO SOUND. UGH! I've tried several things including disabling my motherboard internal sound card. It is in slot 0. This didn't do a thing. I'm really frustrated and definitely a Newbie to linux so at a loss to do much on my own.

Help

I had the same problem after installing twice and getting the updates. I was able to fix this in the Alsa mixer under the switches tab. I had to uncheck the Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack. As soon as I did that the correct port, green for me, on the back started working fine. Good luck
