Click the sound icon --> Sound Preferences --> Output --> Connector: Analog Output
To switch back to laptop speakers change the connector to Analog Speakers.

With my laptop I have the same issue ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/754840 ), you might want to report a bug about it.
Simply run the following command via the terminal and answer to questions: ubuntu-bug

In the tab Output there should be a dropdown menu. See this image: http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/6278/screenshot1c.png

Maybe this helps:
Open a terminal and execute the following command:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Then add the following line to the end of the file on a new line:
options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad

Save the file and reboot.
