I have now found a solution as follows:

I opened a terminal and entered the following:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

I added the line:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

I saved the file and rebooted and sound from the internal speakers then worked.

Hopefully this will help others. Remember to use gksudo with GUI apps like gedit, not sudo
