Natty Install Problem TiMidity

I seem to have an install problem.

My Acer5920G Laptop had a new Lucid installation, and did the upgrade to Maverick. No real problems.

The Update Manager gave me the notification that Natty was available, so gave it a click. It seems to have gone through all the software downloads etc, and I clicked on the Restart Computer Now button.

During the restart process, I have the blackscreen with all the *Starting (or *Stopping) messages with the [OK] message (there is one [fail] which is * Stopping automatic crash report generation [fail].

The last four lines at the bottom of the page are as follows:

saned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned
* Enabling additional executable binary formats binfmt-support [OK]
* Checking battery state . . . [OK]
* Starting TiMidity++ ALSA midi emulation . . . [OK]

and then I just get a blinking cursor . . . . .

A ctrl-alt-del will cause a restart, a purple ubuntu screen, and then back to the text when it stops as above. Hitting the power switch causes a few similar lines to flash on the screen (too quick to read) before shutting down. Powering back up gets me back to the same blinking cursor . . . .

I'm reasonably relaxed (I'm sure theres a fix out there), I have a Maverick Netbook to work with in the meantime, but would like my laptop back at some point !

Can anyone give me a clue how to Put Fix ?

Nope, I've given up . . . .

To fix, I burnt a natty iso and did an upgrade install. First attempt was a bit of a problem, despite the cd version finding wifi/trackpad/mouse, the reboot wouldnt. Ran it again and Natty has finally installed.

It looks nice. I had Unity on my Maverick Netbook install and it looked very much a work in progress. But I think I'm going to like Natty . . . .

But the Install Guys . . . . . .

. . . . I think its going to be a while before I use the Update to install a new package, that was getting a tad nerve wracking . . . .

Just post a bit of an update . . .

In short, I've given up on Unity and switched back to Classic Gnome . . . .

Unity is kind of a good idea. But I DONT like the panels being locked. I DONT like not being able to use Dropbox easily (I wont be using Ubuntu One, I want Dropbox to start automatically and I want an icon so I can see whats going on and access recently changed files easily). I DONT like loosing my four-in-a-line workspace indicator on bottom panel. I DONT like not having tabs open on bottom panel so I can tab between them with a click. I DONT like loosing my menus at top left to access programs and settings. And before someone starts telling me how easy it is to fix each of these faults, tbh icbfa . . . .

I have Gnome back, with Gnome-do (and docky if you want it), and I can do all I want to do, with things where they used to be . . .

If I wanted to relearn a new operating system every time theres an update I'd switch back to (gasp) windoze and pay through the nose for the privelege . . .
