     Have you tried just using the setup script at http://www.atoztoa.com/2010/01/install-alsa-latest-version-in-ubuntu.html ? Alsa-setup was easier for me.

Change file permission and execute script.

$ ./setup-alsa.sh

     Hi. The first line you asked about (chmod +x setup-alsa.sh) simply changes the file permissions so that it can be executed as a program. Nothing different will show unless you examine the directory with something like 'ls -l' so don't worry if it seems like it didn't do anything.
     The second line runs it as a program.

     Did you manage to find the web page and follow instructions? (Sounds like you did...) Also, did you change the lines in 'setup-alsa-sh' so it has the file names in it? The lines you would modify are at the beginning, as follows:

#!/bin/sh

# ----------
# ALSA Setup
# ----------

# ---- Modify Here ----
DRIVER_VERSION=1.0.24
LIB_VERSION=1.0.24.1
UTILS_VERSION=1.0.24.2
# ---- Modify Here ----

     I've changed it here to what it should be - the latest available drivers. So your's should look like that.
     Later in the script, it will download the files for you and install. Make sure you are connected to the internet for that. Depending on the connection speed, it may seem like it isn't doing anything for a while. Does it seem like it is just sitting there? Are the modem lights blinking (if you have any)?
     Well, enough questions. Try it and let me know.
     Originally, it looks like you were missing a file. It couldn't find the file on your computer. This way will download the files and set everything up for you.
     Oh, and when it finishes, it DOES ask that you restart the computer, open a terminal again, and run sudo alsaconf. Sudo will ask for your password - it may say 'root' password, but it's just your password. It's asking for your permission. After that, you should be okay. Make sure your volume is turned up enough to hear anything - it's often turned down by default.

Larry,

I've done this changed the version number as
DRIVER_VERSION=1.0.24

LIB_VERSION=1.0.24.1

UTILS_VERSION=1.0.24.2 and opened gedit and copy pasted into it and changed the file name to setup-alsa.sh. and it is in my desktop then opened the terminal and typed the command chmod +x setup-alsa.sh. This is what i get =
chmod: cannot access `setup-alsa.sh': No such file or directory

     Okay, that gets us closer. It should be saved to your home
directory (usually /home/ullas or something similar to your name).
