desperately need help getting a canon iP4850 printer working with ubuntu 10.10

Asked by Ian Brownlie

My old canon printer (mp630) died after a hard life, now I have a Canon iP4850 and I just can't get it working. I don't know how to install tar.gz files, I have never in 4 years of ubuntu managed to do it. All I get is error messages. So, if anybody knows of a deb package, or any method of getting it working it would be very much appreciated. Thank Ian.

cd; wget http://files.canon-europe.com/files/soft40246/software/ip4800_redhat_debian_guide.tar; tar xvf ./ip4800_redhat_debian_guide.tar; tar zxvf ./cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz; cd cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb/; sudo dpkg -i ./*.deb

Will install the driver
