I am pretty sure your VT1708/A soundchip has encountered the following kernel bug in Ubuntu 10.10:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/667746

Please read the following remark:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/667746/comments/4

As a "workaround" solution and while waiting for a fix in Ubuntu 10.10, you will need to reinstall Ubuntu 10.04 to get sound working again.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Reza for more information if necessary.
