After installing ubuntu 10.10 i lost my sound. had sound w/ubuntu 10.4
Get error:.b@b-inspron-530s=invalid- entry length-o-dmi table-is-broken-stop. Would this apply?

Your Terminal output shows a lot of muted channels in the ALSA mixer settings.

Please install gnome-alsamixer using the following command:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer

Then unmute and increase volume to 100% for the following mixer channels:

Simple mixer control 'Front',0
Simple mixer control 'Surround',0
Simple mixer control 'Center',0
Simple mixer control 'LFE',0
Simple mixer control 'Side',0
Simple mixer control 'Line',0

Then retest sound output using both headphones and speakers.

Please try this procedure if the sound issue presists:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following command (copy/paste command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

In the gedit editor, scroll down to the last lines of the alsa-base.conf file and add these 2 lines to the end of the alsa-base.conf file (with the file open inside the gedit editor!):

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dell

Step 3: Reboot pc and retest sound using both headphones and speakers.

Step 4: If sound is still not working after a reboot, replace the 6stack-dell model option with one of the options below and then reboot and retest sound again.

ok make sure all levels in gnome volume manager are cranked, also run:

have alsa control panel back by using script given. Still no sound.
Have slsamixer in terminal all cranked and unmuted. No sound.

My instructions were not correctly followed....

Your Terminal output (from an hour ago in a different thread) shows the following issue:

So you set the model option to 6stack-dell Dell machines with 6stack (Inspiron 530)

which is incorrect.

And there is a space between model= and 6stack-dell

What I asked you to do, was to add the following 2 lines to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dell

Please make sure to DELETE the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dell Dell machines with 6stack (Inspiron 530)

Then save the change, reboot and retest sound output using headphones and speakers.

If it does not help, replace the model option with ONE of the other model options, for example: model=3stack-dig or model=acer-aspire-6530g , etc....)

You should only test ONE model option at a time in the alsa-base.conf file between each reboot.
