Asked by Pedro Cunha

Ok, so I already solved this problem once, by adding the line

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

to the alsa-base.conf file, which did solve the issue...but it happened again after I went to Win7 and back. Now I'm on a clean install and sound is not working, not even after adding the line. Here's all the information I have:

http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=cf5e5030f45814801c543e6b7fba9cdf0470cdc7

I'd appreciate some help. I've tried updating through this guide here to 1.0.24 (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure), but it messed up my comp so badly I've decided to ask again.

Note: After I "updated" to 1.0.24, both alsa-lib and alsa-utils were updated, but for some reason alsa-drivers were not.

Thanks.

I suggest following this procedure:

http://www.uluga.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10243432&postcount=2

whichI found in the following thread:

http://www.uluga.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1646249&pag

So replace the line

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

with the line

options snd-hda-intel model=auto position_fix=0

Then do a COLD reboot of your PC (power off and back on again) and boot into Ubuntu.

Then retest sound output using headphones and speakers.

There is also a bugreport for precisely this problem:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/706128

I will check out the links when the forums are back up, but I am feeling kinda stupid atm... I turned the laptop off for the night and guess what? The sound worked when I turned it on a couple of minutes ago. Imagine the look on my face when the "Thing" made sound. :P

However, I fear it will do the same again, but for the time being, I will mark this as solved. Thank you so much for your help, Mark.

I think that your sound issue only occurs when you do a warm reboot and not when doing a cold reboot.

The difference is explained here:
