In case it wasn't obvious, I'm an Ubuntu noob. :P Sorry about the crappy attempt at formatting the text from terminal.

I should add the sound worked fine for several days, but just stopped suddenly.

Thanks!

Run:

alsamixer

If all levels are cranked and unmuted then try:

sudo -i

Then run:

echo "options snd-hda-intel model=ref" >> /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf; exit

Then reboot, do you get sound (may need to check alsamixer again)

Thanks for the reply!

Everything was maxed in AlsaMixer.

No change after running per your recommendation.

ok run:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Delete the line you added then add:

options snd-hda-intel model=dell

Save the file and reboot, does it help. If not, re-edit and change it to:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto
or
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop

Nada.

Probably doesn't mean anything, but when I changed to "auto" and rebooted, the speaker icon on the right side of the top panel disappeared. It returned when I changed to "laptop".

Thanks again for the assistance!

You have not tried all valid model options yet for the STAC9200 audio codec.

Please follow this procedure:

1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

2. Using the gedit editor, add the following lines to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:

# Keep snd-pcsp from beeing loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m27

3. reboot and retest sound using headphones and speakers

4. If the dell-m27 alsa-base.conf option does not work, please try one of the following, reboot your pc and retest sound using headphones and speakers.

Only set ONE model option at a time in the alsa-base.conf file between EACH reboot. Do NOT mix several model options in the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file!

295 STAC9200

Okay, small update:

I went through and tried the relevant suggestions in this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449 with no success.

From there, I found the "ALSA Upgrade Script" thread here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1046137 - did the script with the -s (snapshot) option. It downloaded, compiled and installed fine, but when I rebooted everything disappeared! No sound card, no alsamixer, nothing. Then, I ran the -r option and got a bunch of errors.

So, I decided to wipe the whole computer and start again. Reinstalled 10.10, installed all the updates presented in Update Manager, and I'm back at square one.

Still no sound, but I did learn quite a bit about various commands and scripts along the way.

I ended up removing ALSA and installed OSS v4. It's working - for now at least.

Derek,

I just found this post and I'm having a similar (or possible the same) problem. I am also running 10.10 and up until just recently my sound was working fine.

My setup uses an Intel DH57JG motherboard. I have an HDMI cable going to my display and analog cables going from the display to my speakers. I also have a separate, direct digital audio connection via optical cable going from the computer to my speakers. The speakers allow me to listen to both analog and digital outputs simultaneously.

Previously my sound worked fine. In fact I was able to get sound simultaneously over the HDMI and the optical cable if I wanted. I prefer to have the sound go though the optical cable, though, as it allows me to turn off my display and still listen to music.

However, I just noticed today that I was only getting sound via HDMI. Even if I specify to use the digital audio IEC958 output, the sound comes over the HDMI connection only. The only thing I can think of that has changed recently is that I ran the update manager some time within the last week, I don't remember when exactly.

I'm going to try changing some settings to see if I can find a solution. However, I have a question. When you decided to reinstall 10.10, did you notice if your sound was working when you finished the install, before running the updates?

My hypothesis is that a recent update has caused this problem.

No, it didn't work when I reinstalled Maverick. I was thinking an update was the issue also, but I wasn't able to find anything specific, though.

Our issues might be related, but it sounds like your system is a bit more sophisticated. I'm using an old Dell lappy that was on its way to the scrap heap.

As mentioned, I ended up going with OSS drivers. ALSA has more features and is more user-friendly, but without working sound it didn't do much for me.

Good luck!
