Why does my macbook 4.1 mic not work?

started up Sound Recorder in Ubuntu but could not hear any recording values on playback...why?

I am answering my own question for the benefit of others.
I admit from the outset that this is a newb error.
If, like me, you have found your MacBook Mic unresponsive and you find yourself scratching your head and start fretting about codecs and terminal code and and and....
the answer is simple:
1) click the volume icon in the top panal
2) select "sound preferences"
3) select the "input" tab
4) make sure that the "mute" check box is NOT filled.

Yeah...I'm a dummy.

I'm new to Linux/Ubuntu (switched from Mac) and figured maybe someone else may be asking the same perfectly normal question.

If you are looking at this post and thinking something less than sympathetic camaraderie then perhaps you need to take a look at what Ubuntu is about and what the word actually means.
