Asus G73JW laptop Subwoofer not detected

Asked by Christian Parent

I got An Asus G73-JW laptop which I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on it, everything works except that the internal Subwoofer is not detected. When I go in sound preference, I only have Stereo output and 4.0 no 2.1 or 4.1.

No sound comes out of it but it does work with the OS that came with it.

Seem like the problem would come from the sound chip which does not have full support yet.

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
Codec: Realtek ALC259

Hi Christian,

I have the same problem. Seems like a patch for this has been submitted (see http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=ac612407932be18697b5ae9da0a80f138b8bea8e).
I guess it'll be in 2.6.37, but I have by no means insight into the devel process of the alsa module.

... but if you find a way to configure ALSA manually to recognize the subwoofer don't hesitate to let me know :)

Come to think of it, after looking at the patch: the pin assignment can be done manually by adding it to /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/user_pin_configs and then reconfiguring the driver. But I know of no ways to manually add PCI quirks to a compiled module, so unless you want to try and bake one yourself ...

I cannot test it at the moment, I just sent the unit back to Asus cause it qould not power up at all... Will see in couple of weeks when I get it back :)

Can you help with this problem?
