Sound coming from laptop speakers not headphones

Asked by Ankush N Nayak

I'm using a Dell Vostro 1014 laptop. The laptop speakers work normally but when I plug in a headphone, the sound still plays from the laptop speakers, and not the headphones. My OS is Ubuntu 10.10. Based on a complaint to DELL, they replaced the motherboard assuming a hardware problem, but even after replacement, the same problem recurred. On running diagnostics, prior to booting, sound is played from the headphones. Once booted however, the above problem again occurs. I have tried reinstalling Ububtu but the problem has not been solved. Let me make it clear that there is no problem with the hardware. Please mention what steps I can take to solve this problem.

try:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/unstable; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y upgrade

May help

Could also try:

gksudo gedit /etc/mrdprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

and add this line:

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-vostro

Save the new file and reboot, may help
