Codec + Mixer: IDT 92HD71B7X - card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog] Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:293e] (rev 03) - sound output working via headphones, but not via speakers on Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop in Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS

Asked by Ted Doolittle

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop that came with factory-installed Ubuntu a couple of years ago, I think 8.10, and I just upgraded to 10.04 recently.

Sound works fine in the headphone, but nothing at all from the speakers. I never used the mikes before upgrading, but now want to use Skype. On the Skype test calls, the built-in mike and the microphone jack both record okay; but when I go to Sound Recorder from the menu, I can’t get in; I get an error message that says: “Your audio capture settings are invalid. Please correct them with the "Sound Preferences" under the System-Preferences menu.”

When I try to get into PulseAudio Volume Control or the Sound Preferences from the speaker icon, I also am getting error messages and can’t get in.

I have been running Ubuntu exclusively at home for a couple of years, but I am not expert at all and have to fumble my way through, so very specific directions would be much appreciated!!

Here are the outputs of the suggested scripts on the Sound Troubleshooting Procedures page:

Hi,

Please try this procedure:

0. Run the following command in a Terminal to delete the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.save file:

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.save

1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

2. Using the gedit editor, ADD the following lines to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file and SAVE the change:

# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1

3. reboot and retest sound using headphones and speakers

4. If the dell-m4-1 alsa-base.conf option does not work, please try one of the following, reboot your pc and retest sound using headphones and speakers.

Only set ONE model option at a time in the alsa-base.conf file between EACH reboot. Do NOT mix several model options in the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file!

Mark R. and actionparsnip: thanks so much for your help. Deeply appreciated.

Here is what I did:

I first tried actionparsnip's recommendation of:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/unstable; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y upgrade

also run:

and ensure all levels are cranked and unmuted

That seemed to make no difference; same problem of no sound from the speakers; but when I did Mark R's suggestion of:

0. Run the following command in a Terminal to delete the /etc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base.conf.save file:

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.save

1. copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

2. Using the gedit editor, ADD the following lines to the end of the
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file and SAVE the change:

# Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
options snd-pcsp index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1

3. reboot and retest sound using headphones and speakers

It worked perfectly; speaker, headphones, and both built-in and plug-in mikes worked fine, everything with excellent clarity.
