Static is outputted by speakers instead of sound

My computer is a Sony VAIO PCV-RS720G has Pentium 4 (530) at 3.0Ghz, Intel GMA 900 Graphics I believe, and 1.5GB of RAM with no swap partition set up. I have Windows XP as the first partition of my hard drive and Ubuntu 10.10 as the second. Not sure if any of this matters, but just making sure you guys have enough info. Also I have tried different speakers and headphones on my computer and I still hear static. Sound works fine on XP.

Thanks, I started messing with the settings in the GNOME ALSA Mixer and now the sound works great, no static whatsoever. I think the problem may have been caused by a USB Video Cam with a microphone integrated with it, but I'm not sure. Well thanks for helping a Ubuntu novice like me bring new life to my old comp :D.

Static came back, but I assume the sound card is faulty instead of the software. It doesn't matter too much because I just got a new sound card.
