sound not played in hp laptop

 hi i am a new user of ubuntu. i have just installed it in my hp G62 laptop. but the sound of my laptop is not working though it can be heard in headphones and with other O.S.(Windows 7). i tried a lot by googling the problem but none were working for me. so i wish you to help me in simpler way so that it wont be problem to execute command in terminal as i am new to ubuntu.
while i look for sound driver in windows 7 i found that its Realtek High definition,(name:RTKVHD64.sys ; version 6.00.0001.5992(English).)
i am looking forward to hearing positive from your side soon so that i can use ubuntu as my full time working environment with sounds and musics

Can you give the output of:

sudo lshw -C sound

What windows says is not overly useful as it's a different OS with different support

If you are running lucid:
sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic

Will install what you need and should be ok after a reboot
