HELP! Microphone doesn't work at Ubuntu 10.10

I have a HP dv4 laptop with a IDT 92HD71B7X card. My microphone doesn't work at all, both external (headphones) and internal. The output audio works only with my headphones. The microphone is the only thing I need to enjoy Ubuntu. I can't believe that I had to come back to Windows just because my microphone doesn't work. Thanks a lot (I am new on this stuff, I just left Windows).
Ah, yesterday I don't know how the microphone worked with Alsa mixer, but not anymore =(
