Please execute step 1 (ALSA upgrade procedure) and step 2, then reboot and send us the full terminal output from step 3 and step 4 from this procedure:

Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if known).

Please post all the Terminal output (including model and make of PC) at the following location:

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the reply. Im a novice completely. Whilst running sudo /sbin/alsa-utils stop
I get the following :

sudo: /sbin/alsa-utils: command not found

Any ideas how to sort this out? Thanks.

The right command in Ubuntu 9.04 is

sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils stop

The right command in Ubuntu 10.04 is

sudo /sbin/alsa-utils stop

You can find out the right location by running this command:

which alsa-utils

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the help. Version of Alsa changed to:-

ben@ben-laptop:~$ cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23.
Compiled on Sep 29 2010 for kernel 2.6.28-19-generic (SMP).
ben@ben-laptop:~$

This alone didnt cure the fault still no sound. All channels un muted still no sound. After downloading various plugins available in Synaptic package manager, including Gnome alsa mixer i rebooted for a second time and got sound. My advice if anyone is in this situation again is download all the MP3, and other audio codecs that you can and the restricted package add ons. Worked for me!

PS im using :-
HP Pavilion DV-1210 SA
With ATI RADEON graphics,

thanks all
