No sound on Lucid: Have sound on dual booted windows.

Asked by Ron Cadby

I can't find good instructions to solve my sound problems for Ubuntu Lucid.

I have:
Asus U52F laptop
HDA Intel ALC269
Intel Corp. 5 series/3400 Hi Def
Ubuntu Lucid 10.4 installed as dual boot with Windows 7

Sound works on Windows. I had speaker sound with Lucid at first, now nothing. Tried making my earphones work and screwed something up.

I've installed Pulse, Alsa,

I see sound bars working with the pulse audio volume meter.

I see no devices to configure. I see "No cards available for configuration."

Volume settings are at maximum and there nothing is 'muted'.

I've edited modprobe.d a gazillion different ways.

Isn't there some way to get Lucid to make the sound work?

Run:

alsamixer

in a terminal and make sure no levels are muted and all sliders are cranked. Also make sure the gnome levels are cranked and unmuted. If you have on of those weird soundcards onboard that switches ports as needed then you need to use the correct port as Ubuntu doesn't play with those too well.

Please execute step 1 and step 2, then reboot and send us the full terminal output from step 3 and step 4 from this procedure:

I had already checked the obvious re levels and muting.

What's this about the sound card switching ports? That's a new one on
me. How do I check that?

Audio connectors under windows can just switch when an input / output device is detected. Make sure your speakers are attatched to the correct holes, are turned on and turned up some.

I just checked the output at the following location:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/126064

There are several issues with the Terminal output at that location:

1) please do not log in as root user. You should log in as normal user and execute the root commands using sudo

Please read the following for more info about the use of sudo: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

You should test sound using the normal Ubuntu user, not using the root user. This is very important.

2) I also saw the following error in the logs:

"[ 18.051107] snd_hda_codec: disagrees about version of symbol snd_ctl_add"

Also saw this output:

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23.
Compiled on Aug 10 2010 for kernel 2.6.32-24-generic (SMP).

Kernel: Linux rcadby-asus 2.6.32-24-generic #43-Ubuntu SMP Thu Sep 16 14:17:33 UTC 2010 i686

I think this means that you still need to recompile ALSA against the newer kernel. It is possible that you recently upgraded to a newer Ubuntu kernel version. In that case, you will need to recompile ALSA 1.0.23 again....

3) There are a lot of model options defined at the same time in the following file:

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:#options snd-hda-intel model=auto
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:#options snd-hda-intel model=asus-U52F
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:#options snd-hda-intel model=asus-laptop
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:#options snd snd-hda-intel index=0 model=asus-laptop
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:#options snd-hda-intel model=auto
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:options snd-hda-intel index=-2 model=auto
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:options snd-hda-intel index=-2 model=basic
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:options snd-hda-intel index=-2 model=eeepc-p703
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:options snd-hda-intel index=-2 model=eeepc-p901
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:options snd-hda-intel index=-2 model=asus-laptop
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:options snd-hda-intel model=asus-U52F

Please DELETE the following file using the following command:

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

Please REMOVE ALL model references in the following file:

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

So make sure there are no lines containing something like "model=......." in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Then recompile ALSA against the new kernel.

Then REBOOT and then send us the full terminal output from step 3 and step 4 from this procedure:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Post the Terminal output at the following location (here):

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/126041

Please do NOT post into a separate thread as it makes things confusing...

Your ALSA output shows the following mixer issue:

Simple mixer control 'Speaker',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch penum
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 87
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [-65.25dB] [on]
  Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [-65.25dB] [on]

Please use gnome-alsamixer to increase volume to 100% on the 'Speaker' channel

If increasing the volume does not help, then I believe your sound codec is experiencing the following bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/582199

In that case, try the solutions in that bugreport, including the following proposed solution:

It has never been a 'volume' of 'mute' problem. The sound worked with
9.10 and stopped with Lucid installation.

What do they mean "uninstall the others"? Remove ALSA altogether?

Do NOT remove ALSA altogether.

Ignore the remark "uninstall the others"

Just run the following commands:

wget http://people.canonical.com/~diwic/temp/alsa-intel-hda-optiplex-dkms_1.0.23_all.deb

sudo dpkg -i alsa-intel-hda-optiplex-dkms_1.0.23_all.deb

Then REBOOT and retest sound using headphones and speakers.

No joy.

Somehow I now get a little 'dingaling' when I power up before booting into Lucid. Whoopie! Otherwise, no sound.

What does "fix committed" mean? Can I expect some good news re alsa sound problems?

It means you're SOL unless you want to upgrade the latest bleeding edge release.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Ron Cadby for more information if necessary.
