Asked by Razvan

Hello everybody,

After installing Ubuntu 10.04 in a rather unconventional manner (please kindly refer to question #123916 for further details https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/123916 ) I am facing a no sound problem on my IBM X40.

I have followed the step-by-step guide from here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449 but with no improvement of the situation. Everything looks in mint condition, except the fact that I had to add my user to the audio group ( as instructed @ Adding the current user to the audio group ), but..still no sound at all.

Any ideas, suggestions, questions are more than welcomed.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/unstable; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade

May help. Also make sure the sliders are cranked and unmuted in gnome's volume manager as well as run:

alsamixer

in terminal to ensure the sliders are cranked and no channels are muted

Thank you for your prompt reply.

After doing as instructed, I still have no sound :(

I forgot to mention two things though...

a) In alsamixer the "Headphone Jack sense" as well as the "Line in Jack Sense" are off and cannot be unmuted in any way (but I presume that this is normal because no Jack :) was yet connected there) and so are the Mic Boost +20db (and all the Mic-Related volume bars), the Video , the Mix and the Mix Mono (all appear as "Off,Off"). The External Amplifier does not look off, but is stuck at level 00.

b) Pulse is the user name I initially replaced.

Re: No audio on Thinkpad X40
Wow.. You're gonna love this one.. I spent hours trying to figure out why my sound wasn't working, but low-and-behold, it was the stupid volume buttons that I "did not notice" on the actual x40..!$#@! My girlfriend actually pointed them out while we read tdpeek3's reply to a private message.

I didn't even notice them!! Pretty amazing, and really funny. I'm just glad that I was able to learn more about sound in Linux by having this imaginary problem. =)

For those as visually challenged as I am:

The buttons are next to the "Access IBM" button above the keyboard.

Hi again,

It would've been nice to get the sound working after pressing the IBM buttons, but, well, it's just not the case.

Unfortunately I do not know how to enter the "Failsafe GNOME" session, but I noticed that just before seeing the log in page, Ubuntu writes some text lines saying that Applying AC97 Quirk3 failed...and right after that the "Pulse Audio" has a red asterisk on its left and it's test doest not conclude with [OK].

Considering all this, is it possible to guide me to a more specific path, please ?

Hi Mark,

And thank you for your post.
Please kindly consider the following lines as result of the steps 2,3,4 and please note that after the last line, the terminal did not display anymore its typical input mask: mama@mama-laptop:~$
(it just kept on blinking allowing me to write at the cursor but with no outcome whatsoever, therefore I was forced to close the terminal...And the same thing happened each time I ran this command cat /proc/asound/cards; sudo rm /etc/asound.conf; sudo rm -r ~/.pulse ~/.asound* ;sudo rm ~/.pulse-cookie; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install aptitude; sudo aptitude install paman gnome-alsamixer libasound2-plugins padevchooser libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio; aplay -l; sudo lshw -C sound; sudo lshw -short;ls -lart /dev/snd; cat /dev/sndstat; lspci -nn; sudo which alsactl; sudo fuser -v /dev/dsp /dev/snd/* ; dpkg -S bin/slmodemd; dmesg | egrep 'EMU|probe|emu|ALSA|alsa|ac97|udi|snd|ound|irmware'; sudo /etc/init.d/sl-modem-daemon status; sudo grep model /etc/modprobe.d/* ; sudo dmidecode|grep roduct; lsmod | grep snd)

This command is different and does not contain the aplay -l command that caused your Terminal to stop sending output....

Indeed, no problems now with the terminal !
Its output was:

mama@mama-laptop:~$ sudo lshw -C sound; sudo lshw -short;ls -lart /dev/snd; cat /dev/sndstat; lspci -nn; sudo which alsactl; sudo fuser -v /dev/dsp /dev/snd/* ; dpkg -S bin/slmodemd; dmesg | egrep 'EMU|probe|emu|ALSA|alsa|ac97|udi|snd|ound|irmware'; sudo /etc/init.d/sl-modem-daemon status; sudo grep model /etc/modprobe.d/* ; sudo dmidecode|grep roduct; lsmod | grep snd

Try copy-pasting the following command into the Terminal:

echo enable,0x00ffffff >/proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey

Then press the volume up button on your laptop.

To make this change persistent after reboots, you need to follow this procedure:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/73060

Read the following remarks from Jim:

"Using

gksudo gedit /etc/rc.local

open the /etc/rc.local file.

The file should end with "exit 0". Before the exit statement, add the "echo enable,0x00ffffff >/proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey" statement and save the file. The rc.local script file should be automatically executed after every reboot.

This is what worked for me."

I have done what you advised, but although I am a complete beginner in Linux (no sooner than yesterday have I decided to try Ubuntu after a most unpleasant experience while trying to reinstall Win XP on this machine using only its HDD and another laptop) I think that this command is unbound...

mama@mama-laptop:~$ echo enable,0x00ffffff >/proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey
bash: /proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey: No such file or directory
mama@mama-laptop:~$ gksudo gedit /etc/rc.local
mama@mama-laptop:~$

(I have edited the /etc/rc.local file. Now rebooting just in case...)

Please read the remarks in step 7 of the procedure I previously gave you:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

The follow remarks are given in step 7:

"On some Toshiba laptop models (T40, T43p, ... R51e ...), the audio is muted, if either Headphone or Line Jack are NOT muted in alsamixer. See also ALSA Wiki FAQ [1]. Also, if Headphone Sense or Line Jack Sense are unmuted, audio is dead (R52, X40). By default the Sense settings are not shown in GNOME. A channel is muted in alsamixer, if there is an "MM" under that specific channel/volume bar."

So after muting Headphone Sense AND Line Jack Sense in gnome-alsamixer, please make sure to test sound output using both headphones AND speakers.

Make sure to test headphones on both primary AND secondary headphones jacks on the PC...

The following terminal output shows that Headphone and Line Jack Sense are currently UNmuted on your PC:

Simple mixer control 'Headphone Jack Sense',0
  Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined penum
  Playback channels: Mono
  Mono: Playback [on]

Simple mixer control 'Line Jack Sense',0
  Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined penum
  Playback channels: Mono
  Mono: Playback [on]

They should be muted as a workaround for the audio quirks / bugs on your PC.

Hi,

Unfortunately there is absolutely no change in sound output :( event after muting them..but while rebooting I keep seeing that before the log in page, Ubuntu writes some text lines saying that Applying AC97 Quirk3 failed...and immediately after that it shows that the "Pulse Audio" has a red asterisk on its left and it's test doest not conclude with [OK].

Should I try this..?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound

I just want those speakers/headphones to generate something, it's not perfect sound that I expect from this laptop :)

I think you are getting the error

[ 18.612349] ALSA ac97_codec.c:2885: applying quirk type 3 failed (-2)

because there is a line containing ac97_quirk=3 in your

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file.

So you need to edit the file using this command:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Then remove the line containing ac97_quirk=3

If the option is not in alsa-base.conf, it has to be hidden somewhere else.

In that case, run the following command:

grep quirk /etc/modprobe.d/*

to find out where the quirk option is hidden.

You can try Open Sound System (OSS), but I cannot give support for that, as I never used OSS myself...

[ 17.215668] thinkpad_acpi: Unknown symbol snd_ctl_notify
[ 17.217940] thinkpad_acpi: disagrees about version of symbol snd_card_create
[ 17.217943] thinkpad_acpi: Unknown symbol snd_card_create

These errors are documented in the following bugreport:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/566647

You will FIRST need to eliminate those "thinkpad_acpi unknown symbol" errors by following ALL suggestions in that bugreport.

These thinkpad_acpi errors are probably the reason why the following command (that I previously gave you) is not working:

echo enable,0x00ffffff >/proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey

If that does not help, then install Ubuntu kernel 2.6.35 using the following procedure:

http://theubuntunews.blogspot.com/2010/08/install-new-kernel-2635-on-ubuntu-1004.html

Then REBOOT and choose to boot kernel 2.6.35

Then copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:

echo enable,0x00ffffff >/proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey

Then press the volume up button on your laptop.

Hi,

Removed the quirk "options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=3" located in "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base" following your advice. (still no sound after that, and the PulseAudio displayed that red asterisk right before the login screen.

Next, I installed the Ubuntu kernel 2.6.35 (I also tried your other advice, but did not work), and now ...ta daaa... I lost the mouse pointer (and I keep seeking it by pressing CTRL :) ), but I am happy to announce that I managed to succesfully run "echo enable,0x00ffffff >/proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey" (but only after sudo -i command was issued at the prompt).

Those fancy buttons now work, but, unfortunately I still have no sound coming out of my IBM X40 (it is not Toshiba)

Wow...sound working only on headphones after putting computer into hibernation and waking it up in order to restore the mouse pointer ( as temporary work around of what I reported to be a bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/630420 ).

Any ideas on how to convince the built-in speakers to play some sounds too :) ?

Because now, after consecutive hybernations Linux seemed to have crashed and displays exactly the screen before the login page I do have now plenty of time to copy what is written there...

fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
/dev/sda1: clean, 234676/2342912 files, 1244502/9354752 blocks
* (white star) Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox [OK]
* (white star) Setting sensors limits [OK]
* (RED star) Speech-dispatcher configured for user sessions
* (white star) Starting the Winbind daemon winbind [OK]
* (white star) Starting Common Unix Printing System: cupsd [OK]
* (RED star) PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions
* (white star) Enabling additional executable binary formats binfmt-support [OK]
* (white star) Checking battery state [OK]

Hope that helps.

..it seems to have crashed, but I can navigate with the mouse pointer above that text image ( probably this is a ghost image trapped in the video memory which now overlaps the active screen, because it even changes into text cursor, hand with finger cursor.. )

I have further reported this mounter problem as a bug ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/630420 ), but since the sound issue is now solved (most likely I have faulty speakers), I am considering this problem solved.
Thank you all once again for all your time & support.
All the best from Bucharest!
