installed updates.
no sound now...icon shows muted. But left click shows normal
no java (still)

update manager said 1 package not fixed or working...couldn't tell which

Please close all GUIs related to package management, e.g. Synaptic, Software Center, Update Manager.
Please try the update via CLI and open a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal).
Please follow the procedure discribed there:

In case of errors post complete in- and output.
