no sound

here we go again. now ubuntu 10.04 has no sound on anything. WHY?

can't get firefox out of way to do this. it takes up entire screen now. can't find default key. i presume there is one somewhere.
top of screen is now file edit view history etc from firefox. don't know how that happened. followed the instructions all the way to "stop"

presume i am still in safe mode after selecting defaults with...
firefox -safe-mode
don'e know how to return to normal.
article doesn't say.
