Speaker compatibitity with Ubuntu?

Asked by titagula

I was wondering, will typical PC speakers work with Ubuntu? I was reading a forum for speakers, and they tried them out with a Mac computer, and only one of the satellite speakers worked, the sub-woofer didn't work, but when plugged into a computer with windows, it worked fine. So my question is, is there compatibility issues with speakers? If so, does anyone know any speakers that work well with Ubuntu?

Stereo Speakers: Yes.
5.1, may work with a tweak.

Whenever I need to know if some hardware works with Ubuntu or not, I check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/

By the way, Ubuntu 9.10 and later uses pulseaudio instead of alsa.
This means that some programs, especially games written for alsa, will run with problems.

So, to enable 6-channel audio in a desktop PC with integrated sound, backup and then open the file /etc/pulse/daemon.conf as root:
 sudo gedit /etc/pulse/daemon.conf
Find a line that reads :
; default-sample-channels = 2
and replace it with
default-sample-channels = 6
(notice that the semicolon at the begininng of the line is removed, ";" is a comment)
Save and reboot.

Wether this works or not will depend on your hardware.
