by the way
try sudo alsaconf
\and reconfigure your sound control restart a few times. that might help
also, tro getting alsa mixer and increase the volume there

I Tried the driver update from

This is what I have now. Still same symptoms.

We need this output from step 3 and step 4, because you just upgraded your ALSA driver version....

It is a HP Pavilion a465C. with the ASUS motherboard. I am not using any add on cards.

I see the following potential issues with your ALSA configuration:

Both the Pulseaudio and Jack sound servers are running at the same time.

To avoid conflicts between the two sound servers, I suggest uninstalling jackd using the following command:

sudo aptitude remove pulseaudio-module-jack jackd

Using gnome-alsamixer, make sure all channels are NOT muted and make sure they are set to 100% volume, including the Mix and Mix mono channels.

Another potential issue is the following output:

As you can see there, pulseaudio does not have FULL access to ALL your /dev/snd devices (sound devices).

The jackd and timidity processes have exclusive access to some of the /dev/snd devices, which could be the root cause of your sound issue.

Another configuration issue is the following output:

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack

You have configured the snd-hda-intel driver in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf but I do not see the snd-hda-intel driver being used by your sound card....

So I think it is better to remove the line

options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack

in the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Run the following command to start editing the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Using the gedit editor, ADD the following line to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:

options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=3

Using the gedit editor, REMOVE the following line from the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:

options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack

If the ac97_quirk=3 option does not work, then try each of the following settings. Only test ONE setting at a time BETWEEN reboots!

options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=0

OR

options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=1

OR

options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=2

One more problem:

The timidity daemon has exclusive access to at least one of your sound devices, which is - in my opinion - not a good thing.

I believe that timidity may still not be playing nice with pulseaudio (maybe due to account privilege issues)

I suggest running the following command to kill the timidity daemon and then retest sound using both headphones and speakers:

sudo killall timidity

If you are using KDE instead of GNOME, you will need to replace the command

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

with the following KDE command:

kdesudo kate /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Thanks guys I appreciate the help.

I was trying to do this and my hard drive crashed. (Hardware Failed) I ended up re-imaging my system with a fresh install on a fresh hard drive. and tossed the OLD 20 Gig in the trash.

In this process I notice that the front panel connector was part way unplugged. I left it the way it was and the new image had no sound. I Re-seated it and now I have sound. I appreciate all of the help.
