ubuntu doesn't recognize headphones

My ubuntu system does not recognize headphones. I have to manually switch output to my headphones in "Sound Preferences", I would like this to be auto, How do I fix this?

Laptop: Acer Aspire 7540-1284
Ram: 3 Gigs
Storage: 320 Gigs
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 M300 2.0 GHz, 1 MB L2 Cache
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4200
Sound Card(?): Realtek ALC888
Operating System: Dual-boot, Windows 7 64 bit, Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit

As I can see, this seems to be a problem with Realtek cards. See if http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=798945 helps you.

the problem seemed to fix itself after an upgrade but now my built-in microphone won't work D:
