Playback hardware device: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: HDA Generic [HDA Generic] - Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05) - sound not working via headphones or speakers on Dell Studio 14 in Kubuntu 10.04 64-bit edition - solved after upgrading to ALSA driver 1.0.23

Asked by Simone Pagan Griso

Hi guys,
shortly: after a fresh install of kubuntu lucid (64bit) i can't hear anything either from speakers or headphones.
One thing that could be related is that I cannot make the mute/unmute switch work.. or better I do not see them in kMix and alsamixer: no box with 'MM' or 'OO' I was familiar with is present. The result is that I'm not sure channels are properly un-muted. Of course I tried to just blindly unmute but it did not work.
Do someone of you have any idea of what is going on?
 Few more details on hardware:
$ lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05)
$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: HDA Generic [HDA Generic]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I'd like to attach a more complete report of alsa settings I collected with ubuntu-bug alsa-base but I do not see any attachment possibility here.. anyway let me know if you need any other info!!

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

 Simone

Is the system a laptop or branded system? If so can you please provide make and model. Can you also give the output of:

lspci; sudo lshw -C sound

Thanks

Hi,
 it's a laptop, a Dell Studio 14 a bit customized.
If you want I can try to find a place to put the output of ubuntu-bug alsa-base and a screenshot of the alsamixer.
For the moment here's the output of the two commands:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

add this line:

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6

Save the new file and reboot, should be ok.

Hi,
I added the line and rebooted. Still I do not hear any sound (like trying to play a .wav with aplay or initial KDE sounds) and still the alsamixer does not show me any way to mute/un-mute channels..
What can I show you to see why the fix did not work?
Thanks
 Simone

Try:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-3stack
or:
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop

It's this sort of thing you will need to find the right one for your system.

None of them works.. where can I find a list of supported models for a given snd-hda-intel driver version? and where can I query the specific model of my soundcard? or is model referring to the chipset? or maybe I got confuse :p sorry about that..
Just because I'm really curious where can you see that the card is not properly detected?
Thank you very very much for your help!!!! I really appreciate it!

Do you hear PC sound?
Click on your sound icon
and click preference and
see if the slides are all up
or all down. I just turned
them all up then hit apply
if asked for.

Please execute step 1 and step 2, then reboot and send us the full terminal output from step 3 and step 4 from this procedure:

Hi Mark!
upgrading to alsa 1.0.23 completely solved the problem! Thank you very much!
Just for curiosity, in case it's quick: from which log file I could have seen that the alsa driver was failing to correctly detect my card?
Thanks again and thanks to all of you for your help!!
Best,
 Simone
