Hello guys, i am a hard core ubuntu user and i really need a help regarding this issue.
i am using compaq presario CQ42-203AU, and there is no sound from my speakers when running on lucid lynx.
i tested on windows 7 and everything seems to work fine.
i read some thread and i heard that i need to update my alsa.
Could someone PLEASE show an easy way to solve this problem????

okay, i am not sure whether this is really helpful or what, but my running kernel version is:

Your ALSA output shows several issues:

Step A)

Codec: Realtek ID 270 means that your ALSA driver is unable to identify precisely which Codec and mixer type is linked to your soundcard. This is another reason to upgrade ALSA to a newer version. Hopefully, the newer ALSA driver can correctly identify the Codec.

So there is no good reason YET to set a model option in the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file.

Run the following command:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

In the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file, REMOVE the following line, if it exists:

options snd-hda-intel model=m51va

Then save the change to the file.

After executing steps A, B and C, please reboot and retest sound.

selamat sejahtera ( good day!) guys
ok, i had done all the procedure all nite long+ early morning, but not successful.
ok, here's bit of more info:
1) actually my sound system do work, but in a very weird way. if i opens windows for some time, and restart to ubuntu, the sound seems to work. or if i left the computernd works. but let say i rerstart from ubuntu, or start the computer after using ubuntu, the sound is not working
2) i try to upgrade alsa yesterday, everything is installed except they indicate i fail to install part of the component of alsa-utils-1.0.23.tar
the error is no place to install or something like that
3)options snd-hda-intel model=m51va does not exist

4) here is the latest report of my trouble shooting procedure. i dont understand a bit:

selamat sejahtera ( good day!) guys
ok, i had done all the procedure all nite long+ early morning, but not successful.
ok, here's bit of more info:
1) actually my sound system do work, but in a very weird way. if i opens windows for some time, and restart to ubuntu, the sound seems to work. or if i left the computernd works. but let say i rerstart from ubuntu, or start the computer after using ubuntu, the sound is not working
2) i try to upgrade alsa yesterday, everything is installed except they indicate i fail to install part of the component of alsa-utils-1.0.23.tar
the error is no place to install or something like that
3)options snd-hda-intel model=m51va does not exist

4) here is the latest report of my trouble shooting procedure. i dont understand a bit:

hello guys again
i had redone every procedure again
n basically:
1) all my driver,lib and utils are alsa version 1.0.23
2) theres no more correctin ( i guess) for step A n C
but i still CAN NOT play sound.argggh!

If ALSA driver, lib and utils are now all version 1.0.23, then please resend output from step 3....

Maybe ALSA can correctly recognize the right codec now.....

All the previous output you sent, was when ALSA driver was version 1.0.21

hello guys

i will send my trouble shoot results later,
a bit more info. when i have fixed an external speaker to my system,no sound is heard too.
i had even used alsa mixer to check for sound and it shows no movements even when i had played a song.
any clue???????????????

hi guys

great news. i don't how it works. i have figured out that this is no more a driver problem. so i did some googling and i typed this in the terminal

sudo alsa conf

after asking for password they check for data base and they found my sound card. i chose the first option and press ok.
next, they want to configure and i chose okay too.
and walla, after that i tested my sound card and it works.

sadly, when i restart, the sound system fails again. but after trying the above method a few time, yeah, the system works great.
hint:after the first configuration, your sound system might not be loud enough.
to fix these, go to the speaker icon, choose preferences, and just maximize few things you see there.
next go to alsa mixer (applications>sound> alsa sound mixer) choose internal speaker ( i guess) and maximize things there too. - alsa audio mixer is only exist if you install it. use sudo apt-get install alsamixer if i am not mistaken. PLEASE DO more googling on this.

now, before i say solved, could anybody explain to me what is really happening to me system??????
cause i am more of a script kiddies than a developer, and i dont know what the heck had i did to my system??
could somebody sum up this issue for the benefit of other user????

It seems that your sound issue was not solved after following step B because the last step in the ALSA upgrade procedure was not executed.

Running the command "sudo alsaconf" is the final step in the following procedure that I gave you:

So if you skip any steps, sound will not work....
