I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop but have problems with sound. The soundcard is detected but Sound Preferences and pulsaudio Volume Control don't show my card.

Every time I boot I have to open a terminal and run "sudo alsa force-reload" and then sound works flawlessly.

My soundcard is supported by alsa and worked perfectly with Ubuntu 9.10

One workaround could be running <alsa force-reload> at boot but I'm not sure where to put it.

Any help would be appreciated.

My PC is of no particular brand (like Hp, Lg, etc). It was assembled on request by a friend of mine.
Motherboard: Intel DG965SS.
Dual Core Intel(R) Core (TM)2 6300 @ 1.86GHz
RAM: 2Gb

First issue is that several audio channels are MUTED in your mixer settings, for both sound cards.

Use gnome-alsamixer to UNMUTE and increase volume on Master channel and Analog Mix channel for the Audigy2 card.

Same problem on your HDA intel sound card.

Use gnome-alsamixer to UNMUTE and increase volume on Master channel, Headphone channel, PCM channel, Front channel, Surround channel, Center channel, etc... etc... for HDA intel card.

After unmuting and increasing volume on both sound cards, please retest sound using headphones and speakers.

I also noticed this output, which could be a second issue on your system:

/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p: timidity 2262 F...m timidity
/dev/snd/seq: timidity 2262 F.... timidity

The timidity daemon has exclusive access to your sound devices, which is - in my opinion - not a good thing.

I believe that timidity may still not be playing nice with pulseaudio (maybe due to account privilege issues)

I suggest running the following command to kill the timidity daemon and then retest sound:

sudo killall timidity

I did notice several audio channels are always muted after booting. Unmuting them doesn't solve the problem. Remember, Sound Preferences and Pulsaudio Control Volume don't show my Audigy card, only the HDA intel sound card. Also, after rebooting, all those channels appear muted again.

However, after I run <sudo alsa force-reload>, Sound Preferences and Pulsaudio Control Volume show my card, all those channels are unmuted and sound works perfectly.

You don't think the problem is here?:
Driver version: 1.0.21
Library version: 1.0.21a
Utilities version: 1.0.22

I'll try the thing about timidity and will let you know.

What you can do is this:

1) first uninstall timidity using this command:

sudo aptitude remove timidity

2) upgrade ALSA to version 1.0.23 using this link:

http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2010/05/02/upgrade-alsa-1-0-23-on-ubuntu-lucid-lynx-10-04/

3) disable your onboard Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:284b] (rev 02) in the BIOS to force Ubuntu to use the Audigy 2 card

Then retest sound using headphones and speakers.
