sound problems in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an Advent machine with Atom processor N270, the sound works only when I execute an embedded video in youtube. Any other application has no sound, even if I install a new application, the sound remains in embedded videos from youtube but the other programs say that they cannot access the sound system. Could somebody give to me precise steps to solve this issue? originally I was using a 9. something version of Ubuntu but when I upgraded to version 10 suddenly the sound began to fail. I tried reinstalling alsa drivers and editing alsa conf files but nothing seems to correct the problem.
