slmodemd process hogging access to /dev/snd devices -> Sound Preferences -> Output tab -> "Dummy Output: Stereo" + audio channels muted in gnome-alsamixer --> sound no longer works on HP Pavilion dv9500 in Ubuntu 9.10

Asked by CraigMcW

I first installed 9.0x about a year ago and I was so impressed Ubuntu recognized the mute and volume buttons on my HP Pavillion dv9500. With 9.10, however, Ubuntu does not. the mute button is always illuminated and no matter whether I press it or try to unmute in the sound widget, I can no longer play anything and get sound on my laptop. Is there a solution please?

Please execute step 2, then send us the full terminal output from step 3 and step 4 from this procedure:

Hi Mark,

thank you very much for your help. The make on the alsa-utils failed. Otherwise the buttons on my laptop do work, but I don't yet hear sounds. Here's the entire output:

Well.... I thought I pasted it into a gedit file, but apparently it didn't copy.

If a make fails, is there a diagnostic?

Output from step 3 shows the first audio issue:

Lots of audio channels are muted and set to 0% volume.

So use gnome-alsamixer (which you just installed) to UNMUTE and increase volume to 77% for the Master, PCM, Speaker, Headphone channel and all other audio channels that are muted in gnome-alsamixer.

Output from step 4 shows the second audio issue:

Your Si3054 Modem is hogging the /dev/snd devices, which is preventing your soundcard from working correctly.

Please try this solution:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/87927

which mentions this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/394500/comments/40

So you need to disable the Si3054 Modem (56k modem) via System/Administration/Hardware drivers

mark,

I do not have the option to disable the modem, only remove it, which I have done and re-booted.

I do not know how to start the alsamixer. I cannot find it in my system administration. the sound utility there shows my volume to be on.

remember, in the initial install, the alsa utilities didn't.

however, I do have sound.

Can you please tell me how to find the alsa mixer?

Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Then run the following command in the Terminal to open gnome-alsamixer:

gnome-alsamixer

Use it to unmute and increase volume on ALL channels

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask CraigMcW for more information if necessary.
