Low sound volume after installing Lucid

Asked by MikeMc

My machine is AMD64 with dual boot Karmic & Lucid.
When I boot into 9.10 the sound just blasts out, but booting to Lucid means I can just about hear any thing that is played through the speakers.
I have googled for Lucid issue but nothing relevant to my problem.
Looking at the log messages I see:
... pulseaudio[2529]: alsa-mixer.c: Your kernel driver is broken: it reports a volume range from 0.00 dB to 0.00 dB which makes no sense.
Yes I have tried the volume controls...everything I can think of but nothing helps.
lspci does not reveal any audio driver info.
