SOUND DRIVERS

I AM USING DELL INSPIRON 1545 LAPTOP WITH UBUNTU 9.10.THE SOUND FROM MY SPEAKERS IS VERY LOW AND SOME TIMES SOUND/MUSIC/VOICE IS BLURRED.AND IS NOT AT ALL CLEAR.SO PLZ HELP ME TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.I WILL BE VERY THANKFUL TO YOU PEOPLE

have you tried this step.

goto system>preference>sound

there is a sub box that may contain different drivers try changing one if available and use the auto test provided

is there a buzzing/crackling sound ?

enter output of "cat /proc/asound/cards" in terminal.
