sound volume muted on Master and PCM channels + slmodemd process hogging access to /dev/snd devices -> Sound Preferences -> Output tab -> "Dummy Output: Stereo" - Codec + Mixer: SigmaTel STAC9250 - Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller [8086:27d8] (rev 02) - sound not working on Gateway M285-E in Ubuntu 9.10 - using ALSA driver 1.0.21
Hey. I'm new to Ubuntu. I just installed it last night. I installed Banshee so I could use my iPod Touch on my computer. But the problem is I have no sound. I have a Gateway M285-E and I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. I tried the sound preferences menu but it says I have no hardware installed so I don't know how to tell you what audio card I have or anything. I ran the sound test and it generated a report to send to Launchpad but I don't know what to do.

Hi :)
Please can you work through the Medibuntu worksheet to try to sort out all the multimedia issues
https:/
If that doesn't also sort the radio then perhaps this guide might help?
https:/
although if the issue is about radio rather than sound then this might not help
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

so I tried the worksheet but it didn't work. The second link you posted has the trouble shooting page. The link to update ALSA in Step 1 would put me on the page but then redirected to some weird site. I couldn't stay on it long enough to get the code. But I still have no sound after doing all the other commands.

Hi :)
Did you get error messages when trying the Medibuntu page or did you get through it fine?
On the SoundTroubleSho
I thought part of the TroubleShooting page created some output for the techies here to look at?
Sorry i am not much help now, hopefully someone with more experience will be around later, perhaps tomorrow. At least you have done the ground-work now.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Your output from step 4 shows the issue your pc is having:
/dev/snd/controlC0: Slmodemd 1072 F.... slmodemd
Your Si3054 Modem is/was hogging the /dev/snd devices, which is/was preventing your soundcard from working correctly.
Please try this solution:
https:/
which mentions this bug:
https:/
So you need to disable the Si3054 Modem (56k modem) via System/
