If you can't hear sound please try the sound tests at System -> Administration -> System testing and choose to report a bug if they fail.

For the vlc part, please state the exact error message. Thanks!

Hi :)

The Medibuntu guide helps sort most multimedia issues and really needs to be worked through after every install of Ubuntu anyway
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
it neatly deals with the copywrite issues of whichever country you happen to be in at the moment.

After this installing vlc should be quite easy although i would also install mplayer even if i never used it. The sound problem should also have been magically fixed by running through that worksheet but if it still is not working then please run through this trouble-shooting guide
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

I was wondering if you were using 32bit version of Ubuntu or 64bit. Personally i stick with 32bit and seem to have far fewer problems than friends using 64bit versions. On my 64bit machine it works superbly although if i had over 3.5Gb ram and if Ubuntu ever needed more than 2Gb then i would find my swap getting used instead of the extra ram.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
