Same (?) problem here: Thinkpad T43, lspci gives me:
Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)

Sound worked in Dapper, but after a clean install of feisty sound is just sometimes working. furthermore, hibernating can cause system to loose sound. let me know if any specific output would help. cheers
