How can I help adding this newer version to Ubuntu?

You can take a few approaches:

  - Contact the Debian maintainer for ale and try to get him to update it -- Nick Rusnov <email address hidden>. I'm not sure if he is still active, or interested in updates.

  - Try to find a MOTU willing to help. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU

  - Learn about Ubuntu packaging, create an updated package, and submit it for review. Some good resources for starting on this are the packaging guide, and the classroom logs from Ubuntu Open Week:

I recommend the "learn packaging" approach, if you have the time. It's interesting and it helps everyone. I know I wouldn't mind having a newer ALE available. It's a really nice utility. :)
