desktop menu entry disappear on 10.10

Asked by j pratte

Have an application the provides a .desktop file - to add a menu entry to the Applications menu.
On Ubuntu 10.10 - when the application is installed the menu entry appears and can be selected. However once ubuntu is rebooted, the menu entry disappears.
On Ubuntu 8.04 - the same application and menu entry works fine. And when Ubuntu is rebooted, the menu entry still appears.
Is there some change for Ubuntu 10.10 that is required?

Please try to add it right clicking on the top left Ubuntu icon and select "Edit Menus" or accessing to menu from:
System→Preferences→Main Menu

Thanks. I am looking for a solution that does not involve any manual steps. In 8.04 it was possible to only drop the .desktop file and the new menu items stayed in the menu list even after reboot. I'm trying to understand if there is a setting or some change in 10.10 that does not allow this to work the same way?

Any other help on this?
Is it simply that .desktop files work differently in 8.04 vs 10.10
Or is it a bug?

Can you help with this problem?
