Yep thought so. You have too many flash plugins. If you have more than one they conflict and you get nothing.

Run this and you should be fine:

sudo apt-get --purge -y remove flashplugin-installer flashplugin-nonfree flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound gnash gnash-common mozilla-plugin-gnash; sudo apt-get --purge -y autoremove; sudo apt-get clean; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y install flashplugin-nonfree

Close ALL browsers then retry the flash content. Should be ok

I have done the following since last post:

1) check with
dpkg -l | grep flash; dpkg -l | grep gnash; dpkg -l | grep swf

no output

2) went to Adobe website and downloaded Flash Player

3) check again wirh

dpkg -l | grep flash; dpkg -l | grep gnash; dpkg -l | grep swf

output
ii adobe-flashplugin 10.1.82.76-1lucid1 Adobe Flash Player plugin version 10

4) restarted web browser, still no sound
5) run Syetem/Administration/System Testing
no sound in any channel (including microphone recording test).

I think the problem now is more than no Internet sound. Somehow in the middle of the trouble shooting since posting the question, I have managed to kill all sound.

Please help...

after reading some comments on lauchpad, I run the following command today:
sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer
It did not do much for the sound.

The reason for me to run the above command is that, when I open the "Sound Preference" panel, there is no place showing ALSA choice ( i.e., the word ALSA does not exist in "Sound Preference"). The panel is very simple with the following tabs:

Sound Effects - how it sounds, e.g. Drip, Glass, etc.
Hardware - there is only one choice: Internal Audio:1 output/ 1 input , Analog Stereo Duplex
Input - can chose from line-in, microphone, etc.
Output - only one choice: Internal Audio Analog Stereo
Application - message: "No application is currently playing or recording audio"

Also let me recap the sequence of the events:
Before upgraded to 10.04, I had all sound working and ALSA in my Sound Preference panel.
After upgraded to 10.04, initially I had sound for the system (can record and replay, can hear sound from Unbutu One music store), but No sound from internet video. No ALSA choice in Sound Preference.
After run the series commands to re-install flashesplugin (see in this post: "actionparsnip said on 2010-09-05"), I have lost all sounds (absolutely no sound at all).

Additional information:
The process of upgrading to 10.04 was NOT smooth at all. There was a lot of warnings during the upgrade. My computer crashed badly and could not restart. Somehow I fiddled around and managed to recover the system and got to where I made this post.
In addition to "no soun" problemd, the internet has been much slower or hanging up (especially when play a video clip) since 10.04 upgrade.

Should I downgrade and how do I do downgrade without loosing my personal files?

Also does my situation with 10.04 has anything to do with my existing hardware (such as video card) on my computer wheich may not be able to handle 10.04?

Can I do a "clean" reinstall of 10.04 to start fresh?

Have you tried the "SoundTroubleshooting" section in the community documentation?

Thank you for the doc, very helpful. and it fixed part of the problem.

After de-selecting "audio group" and ran
sudo aptitude install linux-ubuntu-modules-`uname -r` linux-generic
to clean up, and then power cycle,
now I have sound from speaker when running the test commands in the terminal (aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav).

But there is still no sound when play intenet clips (such as U-tube or BBC News clips).

Where can I find the material about internet sound trouble shoot?

Again, after ran
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

and power cycle

it has killed all of my sound - absolutely nothing from speaker when run
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav.

And I am not able to recover
Something is wrong with the flash plugin package -it kills everything!

I would recommend doing an:

apt-get remove --purge flashplugin-installer flashplugin-nonfree flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound gnash gnash-common mozilla-plugin-gnash

Then reinstall flash with:

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

I'm not familiar with the extrasound package - perhaps that is what is causing your issue. It's worth a shot.

Thank you, Brian.

It seems I am missing something; I ran the 1st command you suggested, but got error messages as the following, could you take a look? thanks.

~$ apt-get remove --purge flashplugin-installer flashplugin-nonfree
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
~$ flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound gnash gnash-common mozilla-plugin-gnash
flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound: command not found

sudo apt-get remove --purge flashplugin-installer
sudo apt-get remove --purge flashplugin-nonfree
sudo apt-get remove --purge flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound
sudo apt-get remove --purge gnash
sudo apt-get remove --purge gnash-common
sudo apt-get remove --purge mozilla-plugin-gnash

Your browser sucks and can't handle copying multiple lines, or you copied it badly.

Thise commands will remove the flash pasckages. The commands need prefixing with sudo or it won't work

You can now run:

mkdir ~/.mozilla/plugins; cd ~/.mozilla/plugins; wget wget http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz; tar zxvf ./install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz; rm ./install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz

Then close all browsers and rerun it, should be ok
