when I download the updates the install always failed , what can I do to recover. If I reboot , the OS will not load
When the update window opens and I try to install the updates , it will start and then at some point it say that it could not intall update because of dependency, then all other updates would stop. start the application again and it is now saying that the OS has an upgrade. if i reboot the OS will not load. Install several times after formatting . same results

This is due to a dependency problem.
Fire up a terminal (Applications>
sudo gedit /etc/apt/
You'll be prompted for a password, enter your password.
An editor opens up. Replace all the lines in the file with the lines below:
deb http://
deb-src http://
## Major bug fix updates.
deb http://
deb-src http://
## Universe
deb http://
deb-src http://
deb http://
deb-src http://
## Multiverse
deb http://
deb-src http://
deb http://
deb-src http://
## Ubuntu Backports
deb http://
deb-src http://
## Repos from Canonical Limited
deb http://
deb-src http://
deb http://
deb-src http://
deb http://
deb-src http://
deb http://
deb-src http://
Save the file.
And then type the following commands in the terminal:
sudo aptitude update
Now try installing the updates.

Try correcting the dependency problem opening terminal and typing in it:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -f install
It will ask your password, enter it. You will not see any asterisks when entering password in terminal.

the problem still exist. I reinstalled gutsy and uopdate icon came up.. I commence to installing some new sw when adeptcrashed. I tried to restart and it kept saying it was open would I liketo try and fix/read only/cancel would never start. adept updater didthe same thing. gave me this message below. Please help

May i suggest you to try the Ubuntu 8.04 beta release, may be your issue disappear with this release
