In the middle of using the computer and it will randomly shut down.

Asked by darkprincess_55

I can be in the middle of doing something on the computer(acer with ubuntu 9.10) and it will randomly shutdown. I will not be able to turn it back on for several minutes. I have tried adjusting the fan, thinking it was overheating, with no success, it is not supported on my computer. I have also installed the Processor % in use bar on my panel and have noticed that simply checking my e-mail on yahoo with firefox will sometimes have the processor at 100% in use. Please help, random shutdowns can not be good for my computer, plus I have retyping job applications because it shuts off in the middle of them .

Thanks

Krystal

Also, this is my first time using a linux based system and I am still learning my way around so if you could help me in ubuntu for dummies language that would be great

We apologize for the inconvenience, this is happening because of a
problem in the kernel. Its been happening over different computers and
it will be fixed soon :)

It will show up as an automatic update in Ubuntu so you just have to
click and install the patch

Cannot help other than confirm that this is also my experience.
Running a Toshiba Satellite A10 Laptop and installed Ubuntu 9.10
Even the installation was a forceps delivery: it froze in mid-install several times at around 27%; 47%; 65%; 80% and finally it managed to get right through.

The very first time, it got through to 97% and I chose to ignore, and press on with trying Ubuntu.
To my regret, as the CUPS and Printer features were not properly installed.

After persevering to 100% installed ☺, I am glad to say that I can now surf (using my preferred Google Chrome Browser for Linux) and can print to my Network printer (Canon Pixma MP640 - with Canon Linux-Driver).
But completing the Application form for launchpad, Ubuntu crashed again.
Only solution seems to be the 'OFF' switch, and re-start, which is a pain.

It will be especially painful if this happens in the middle of an Internet banking session.
IB is the main reason I dedicated this old laptop to secure Internet transactions.
I use Ubuntu 'cos of the reputation of Linux as a secure system.
Also Google Chrome 'cos it is said to be the only web-browser with implementation of the 'sandbox'.
[So far I have not implemented Anti-virus or Firewall software, since I read that it is practically superfluous.]
I realise these side comments are probably out of place in this thread.

I look forward to hearing when the Patch mentioned by Vikram Dhillon will be issued.

Regards & thanks for any comments / info.
