Gutsy won't shut down

Asked by baasha

Ever since my system was upgraded to Gutsy (from Feisty) it will not shut down. Whether I use the shutdown button on the applet panel, or the terminal, the computer seems to shut at least part way down but then goes into a reboot. Then I must use the options menu on the rebooted login screen before it turns off completely.

Things I have tried:
1. Added 'acpi=force cpi=noacpi' to the end of the lines beginning with 'kernel' in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. This worked but only for one shutdown, and then problem came back.
2. From a similar bug report I learned that the Network Manager may have a bearing, so I tried disabling NM. Again, this worked for only one shutdown. On the next boot the NM re-enabled itself.

I have been looking for weeks for an answer to this problem. None of the bug reports or forum discussions are identical to mine, although several are similar. I am out of answers. Does anyone know what this problem may be?

I have also enabled bootclean in System>Preferences>BootUp Manager which gave me a clean shutdown but only once. After a reboot the problem reappears. I really could use some help with this. I have a hard time believing there is no one in the Ubuntu community that nas an idea what might be causing this.

I have an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard with an Invidia chipset. Incidentally, this is a dual boot machine with Windows 2K, which shuts down ok, so that would seem to rule out a problem with the bios. As mentioned earlier, this shutdown problem only appeared after the upgrade to Gutsy. I have been using Ubuntu successfully for over two years. BTW, thank you so much for your response, I was getting near giving up.

i am so sorry for this late response
actually i had the same problem with my intel mother board
and i solved it myself
i think that gusty is more driver specific
try this and see if it works for u (it worked for me)

1. go to the pannel above and click system
2. go to administration
3. then go to screens and graphics
4. a window will appear with two tabs one with screen and graphic card
5. go to graphic card tab and click driver to change the driver
6. on clicking it u will get a window containing choose driver by name and with choose driver by model
7. scroll down to to asus and see if u could find ur driver
8. if u cannot find choose the drivers one by one (in asus) and see if they support ur board

or else
go again to administration and click restricted drivers manager and by doing this gusty checks for any restricted drivers if u need

hope this helps
have a nice day
good luck
