Dell Vostro fan keeps turning on every 10-15 seconds

Asked by Parvez Halim

Hi, I'm a newbie. I just got a Dell Vostro 3550 and installed Ubuntu 11.10. The problem is that the fan keeps turning on every 10-15 seconds for about 5 seconds. I am not doing anything taxing like encoding video. I'm not even watching a flash video. No matter what I do the same thing happens. It's driving me crazy!

Please help!

What is the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a

Also do you have the latest BIOS? If you log in and run no apps does the fan still run as you describe?

the output I get is:

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 11.10
Release: 11.10
Codename: oneiric
Linux parvez-Vostro-3350 3.0.0-16-generic-pae #28-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 27 19:24:01 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

As soon as I'm on the Ubuntu desktop it starts.

I used the command sudo dmidecode -s bios-version (no idea if this is correct. I just googled it) to get the bios version. The answer was A07.

Thanks for the help.
