Ubuntu 11.10 will not shut down or restart

Ubuntu 11.10 will not shut down or restart. This worked fine until now. I have to power-off to shutdown and then reboot. Any advice on this problem wold be much appreciated...

If you run:

sudo shutdown -h now

Does it turn off?

   Yep, works fine BUT how do I shutdown without doing this, as Ubuntu
is supposed to and used to???
