laptop won't shut down or suspend/hibernate

Asked by edit laczo

Got Ubuntu 11.10 on an Asus laptop; every time I want to shut down, it just won't, and after waiting for like half an hour, I have to force shut down by holding the shutdown button. It does the same when I choose suspend or hibernate instead. The screen turns off all right, but the lights stay on, and even the fan starts spinning faster. When it started it got stuck on a black screen with the following script:

checking running unattended-updates

and nothing happened until I forced shut down. Now this screen does not come up anymore, I don't know why, as I haven't changed anything; it just simply won't shut down.

I think it all started when I installed my Nvidia Driver - as it was recommended - which enabled Unity. Should I uninstall Unity and the driver? I don't normally deal with this stuff, so I wouldn't do anything until told exactly what and how.

Thanks for the help.

if you run:

sudo shutdown -h now

does it turn off? Do you have the latest BIOS?

thanks for trying to help; can you please tell me where i can get that information, i will send it straightaway. I really dont know diddly squat about operating systems :)
but I think it's to do with the nvidia drive, as when i was shutting down last night, the screen showed the ubuntu logo with those dots going underneath, then there was a click, the dots stopped, and that was it, it sounded like everything shut down all right BUT the driver for nvidia. so i had to force shut down again, then in the morning it came up with the 'checking disk for errors' message.

this is all the info i got :
memory 938.4MiB
processor AMD Turion 64x2
graphics: GeForce Go 6100/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW!
OS type 32 bit
disk 115.3GB
i guess you want the info one would get from DxDiag in MS windows; I don't know how to find that in Ubuntu.
but thanks again for trying to help.
